John "J.J." Feight

Dear Classes of 1973, 1978, and 1981:

This is a Deacon Alert to inform you of the passing of John "J.J." Feight on April 6, 2020.

J.J. was the father of G. Mark Feight ('73), Max Feight, Brian Feight ('78), and Martha (Feight) Nowatzki ('81).

 

Obituary:

John Joseph Feight, Jr. (“J.J.”), age 94, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota (formerly  Fargo) passed away on April 6, 2020 due to complications of COVID-19. His  wife Arlene and daughter Martha were by his side.  J.J. was born on April 4,  1926 in Clyde, Kansas. Upon graduating from high school, J.J. joined the US  Navy and served in the South Pacific in World War II. He received a BS  degree in Agriculture from Kansas State University and an MS degree in  Journalism from Iowa State University. In 1952, he joined the Kansas  Extension Service, serving as a 4-H Agent until 1958. In 1953 he married  Phyllis Patton and together they had four children (Phyllis died in 1984). After  graduate school, he worked at the University of Illinois as an assistant editor.

In 1967, J.J. and his family moved to Bogota, Columbia for 2 years where he  was an information training officer in a program with the University of  Nebraska. J.J. worked at NDSU as an editor for the ND Extension Service  from 1969-1985, where he was known for his characteristic expression, “read  between the lines!” Throughout his career, J.J. worked as a freelance journalist and photographer for  several agricultural magazines. 

In his personal life, JJ. achieved the highest rank of Fourth Degree in the  Knights of Columbus and was a devoted life-long Catholic. After his retirement from NDSU in 1985, he  married Arlene Anderson and together they spent many happy years in Arizona, Washington, Kansas, and  Minnesota. He was an enthusiastic birder and a member of the Audubon Society and other environmental  organizations. 

He is survived by his wife Arlene of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and his 4 children: G. Mark  (Cheryl), Max (Byrnae), Brian (Carol), and Martha Nowatzki (Chris); three stepchildren, his sister  Margaret Mullins, many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was preceded in  death by his first wife Phyllis Feight, his parents John Sr. and Mary Feight, 2 sisters, Mary and Cecelia,  and his stepson Mark Anderson. A service will be held at a later date.
