North hires Hannah Ohm as head girls golf coach https://alumni.jp2schools.org/news/663341/ https://alumni.jp2schools.org/news/663341/ Fargo North High School has named Hannah Ohm the head girls golf coach for the Spartans, according to a statement Wednesday from North Activities Coordinator Dan Shultis.

Ohm succeeds Chad Christsenson, who resigned last fall.

Ohm's journey in golf began at North High School, where she played golf until her sophomore year. She then transferred to Shanley High School, where she continued to hone her skills and competed at the varsity level through her senior year. She also competed in the summers on the Minnesota Junior PGA tour.

In addition to her competitive experience, Ohm attended U.S. Golf Camps in Saltsburg, Pa.

“We are confident that Hannah's passion for golf, coupled with her extensive experience and dedication to the sport, will have a positive impact on our girls golf program,” Shultis stated. “Her commitment to fostering a supportive and growth-oriented environment aligns with our values at North High School, and we are excited to see the growth and development of our student-athletes under her guidance.”

Jacob Fritz named Shanley boys head soccer coach https://alumni.jp2schools.org/news/661943/ https://alumni.jp2schools.org/news/661943/ By Forum staff

FARGO — Fargo Shanley named assistant coach and alum Jacob Fritz as the Deacons' new head coach.

Fritz, a 2017 Shanley graduate, served as an assistant and played under former head coach Ryan Christianson, who stepped down in Dec. 2023.

Christianson amassed a 93-65-27 record with the Shanley boys over nine seasons. His teams won Eastern Dakota Conference titles in 2015, 2016 and 2023, and the Deacons won the program's second state title with a 2-1 victory over Bismarck Legacy in the 2023 North Dakota boys soccer state championship game on Oct. 14, 2023.

As a senior in the fall of 2016, Fritz was an all-state and all-EDC player for the Deacons.

“Having played and been an assistant, I am very excited to continue the legacy of Deacon soccer in my new role as head coach,” Fritz stated in a Monday press release.

Shanley Activities Director Reggie Jackson stated in the release that Fritz was the logical choice to succeed Christianson.

“Losing coach Christianson is tough but getting a person the caliber of coach Fritz makes the transition much easier," Jackson wrote. "His connection to the Shanley program and having watched him as an assistant made Jacob the clear choice.”

At least for one quarter, 5-5 Bison freshman John Gores proved the doubters wrong https://alumni.jp2schools.org/news/656138/ https://alumni.jp2schools.org/news/656138/

The Fargo Shanley graduate showed some speed and explosiveness in NDSU win over WIU

FARGO — Certainly, there were doubters and it wasn’t because John Gores was a 5-foot-5 receiver who chose to play football for North Dakota State. There were probably people who gave a successful NASA mission to walk on Mars a better chance than the walk-on Gores seeing the field.

There was no guarantee of anything and the Fargo Shanley graduate knew that, saying he was told it was going to be a grind and he was willing to grind. He heard the whispers of it being a pipe dream.

“There definitely were, you hear things every once in a while but you try not to listen to them,” Gores said. “You want to focus more on proving people right rather than proving them wrong.”

He had 41 yards on five carries in the 52-7 win over Western Illinois, showing bursts of speed and the ability to quickly shift direction that was Division I FCS caliber. At least in that regard, he showed he belonged on the Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome stage.

Whether that upswing continues remains to be seen, but he is only a redshirt freshman.

Gores is already popular with his teammates, entering the game in the second half, with players on his sideline chanting his name. He said this week that was always a dream of his going to Bison games on Saturdays growing up in Fargo.

“Dream that to be you and for it to finally happen like that, it was awesome,” Gores said. “I know my little self would have loved seeing that moment.”

Gores has dressed for all four home games at the dome. NDSU easily handled Maine in the home opener but he didn’t play.

Here is the interesting caveat to last Saturday, however: He didn’t know he was going to play running back until the start of the fourth quarter when Bison running backs coach Joe Beschorner told him.

“He came up to me and said," Do you know what you’re doing on these run plays?’” Gores said. “I said, well, not really.”

Beschorner gave the student a quick crash course on the basic plays NDSU called to run out the game. It wasn’t totally new to Gores, who played running back for the practice scout team for about a month last season. He was the scout team player of the week before the Youngstown game, perhaps in the way he was able to mimic 5-9 Penguin standout Jaleel McLaughlin.

McLaughlin busted a couple runs, but the Bison held Youngstown at bay in a 27-14 win. About a year later, Gores did his best McLaughlin imitation against Western almost scoring on one play to the left that he took outside. He outran one defender and juked another at the sideline, but the official saw his foot step on the line.

“By about three inches,” Gores said. “If I could have just stayed in a little bit I was gone.”

NDSU was short a running back last Saturday with the season-ending knee injury to Owen Johnson. The Bison used receiver RaJa Nelson at running back, who led the team with 103 yards rushing.

Up big in the second half, NDSU obviously didn’t want to put another back in the line of fire. So Gores got the call. He’ll probably still be a kick returner and receiver moving forward.

“We talk about expanding your role here so we’ll see what happens,” he said.

NDSU doesn’t test 40-yard dash times for players. Gores has no idea what it would be, or any other distances for that matter. Suffice to say, however, he’s one of the quickest players on the team.

He showed that against Western Illinois. And he does have a sprinter's background. His father, Jerry Gores, is a former NDSU head women’s track and field coach who is in the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame.

“I know my dad was loving it, like 80% of his attire is Bison stuff,” John said. “He was probably more pumped than I was when I got in and got some carries.”
