WAHPETON — On a cloudy Wednesday afternoon at Bois de Sioux Golf Course, some familiar faces and some unfamiliar made their mark at the Class A East Region boys golf tournament.
Grand Forks Red River won the team tournament with an 8-over 292. In second, Fargo Shanley earned its best finish of the season with a 20-over 304.
“I knew they could do it all season,” said Deacons head coach Lucas Johnson. “The guys deserve it. They’ve been working hard all year and ultimately they definitely showed up when they needed to.”
The Deacons’ previous team bests were two fifth palace finishes.
Roughriders junior Kolby Koerner won the individual tournament with a 3-under 68. Fargo Davies’ Porter Seidel ended in second with a 1-under 70.

Seidel finished the front nine at 2-under 34 with back-to-back birds on holes No. 7 and 8. The senior bogeyed No. 14, birdied No. 17 and bogeyed No. 18 to close out the round.
North took third with a 307, Grand Forks Central and Fargo Davies tied for fourth at 312. Sheyenne was sixth at 313 and West Fargo was seventh at 314.
Johnson acknowledged Red River’s prowess at the top of the region, but noted the rest of the field remains fairly even-keeled.
“The middle of the pack is just so competitive,” Johnson said. “The talent level in the East is just so deep.”
Freshman Ryker Grinaker led Shanley with a 3-over 74 to tie for fifth place, along with West Fargo Sheyenne’s Drew Swenson and Fargo North’s Liam Olson.

“He is a solid stick, nothing ever really shakes him,” Johnson said of Grinaker.
Deacons senior Carson Busek and Adrian Fillipi also qualified for the state tournament. The tournament is slated for Tuesday, June 3 to Wednesday, June 4, at Vardon Hills Golf Club in Minot.
Central’s Cole Wilber and Red River’s Stetson Brown both tied for third with even-par 71s. Fillipi, Red River’s Carter Olson, West Fargo’s Aiden Simek and Fargo South’s Dylan Rogne all reid for eighth at 5-over 76.
The Deacons have yet to play Vardon Hills. Johnson said the team shouldn’t worry about shooting a perfect round, but focus on the controllables.
“It doesn’t need to be a perfect round to go out and produce a good quality score,” Johnson said.
