FARGO — Another Mattern is headed to the Concordia Cobbers football program.
Fargo Shanley quarterback Jax Mattern committed to the Cobbers, he announced Friday, July 25, via social media. Mattern, who is entering his senior prep season at Shanley, is part of the 2026 recruiting class.
Cooper Mattern, Jax's older brother, started for the Cobbers at quarterback the three previous seasons.
"He got to spend the last three years around the (Cobbers) program, being around his brother, and he just really enjoyed the program," said Troy Mattern, Cooper's and Jax's father, and also the head football coach at Shanley. "He really enjoys the coaching staff.”
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Jax is set to be a two-year starter at Shanley. He completed 202 of 363 passes for 1,920 yards and 13 touchdowns during his junior season with the Deacons.
“When I was getting recruited, it wasn’t all about Cooper," Jax said. “It’s going to a place where I’m going to be wanted and I’m going to be developed.”
Cooper played in 30 games for the Cobbers and passed for 6,168 yards and 68 touchdowns during his Concordia career.
Cobbers head coach Terry Horan can't comment on Jax Mattern until he signs with the Cobbers. Jax said the Concordia coaching staff made him feel comfortable during his recruitment.
“The coaching staff made it feel like home," Jax said.
The Cobbers posted a 7-3 record and 6-2 mark in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last fall during Cooper's final season as the program's starter.
“He feels like that is the level of football he belongs at," Troy said. “He definitely looks up to his brother a lot, he’s a role model for him. ... (Jax's) comfort zone was being at Concordia and playing in the MIAC.”
